- An evergreen perennial climber, with extended branches, hooks and spines, up to 1-5m in length, found in sub-tropical and temperate zones.
- Taxonomic Features:
- Stem semi-woody with prickles. Leaves simple, heart shaped, alternate, leathery, tough with tooth and spiny margin, under mid rib with spines. Inflorescence an umbellate raceme. Flower actinomorphic, cream in colour. Male flower 9mm across, small. Female flower 6mm. Tapals broad. Fruit a juicy berry, globose, 5mm long, become red on maturity. Seed 4mm long, dark brown.

- Locally ripen fruit is used in scabies.It is used for treatment in kidney problems and rheumatism. Root decoction is diuretic, stimulant and tonic.
